Rhode Island Sports Vision

See the Game Before It Happens

Every athlete knows the feeling: the pitch that looked like a beach ball, the pass that seemed to arrive in slow motion, the shot you saw develop three steps before it happened. That's not luck. That's vision — and vision, like strength, speed, and endurance, can be trained.

At Rhode Island Sports Vision (RISV), we help athletes of every age and level see faster, react quicker, and perform with more confidence. Whether you're stepping into the batter's box, guarding the crease, breaking down a defense, or chasing a fly ball for the very first time, your eyes are doing more work than you realize — and we can help them do it better.

Why Vision Is the Most Overlooked Skill in Sports

Coaches spend hours on footwork, hand-eye drills, and conditioning. But the visual system — the eyes, the brain, and the connection between them — is what actually processes the pitch, reads the defense, and tells the body when and how to move. It's the first link in the chain, and if it's weak, everything downstream suffers.

Elite performance in sports depends on visual skills most athletes never train directly, including:

  • Dynamic visual acuity — seeing clearly while things (including you) are moving
  • Depth perception and tracking — judging speed and distance on a moving ball, puck, or opponent
  • Peripheral awareness — picking up teammates, defenders, and open space without turning your head
  • Visual reaction time — the speed between "seeing" and "reacting"
  • Eye-hand and eye-body coordination — translating what you see into a precise, well-timed movement
  • Contrast sensitivity — performing under lights, glare, dusk conditions, or a white puck on white ice

These aren't things standard 20/20 vision testing measures. An athlete can have perfect visual acuity and still have significant gaps in the visual skills that actually determine performance under game speed. That's the gap RISV is built to close.

Trained Under Dr. Don Teig

RISV's sports vision program is built on training and mentorship under Dr. Don Teig, a pioneer in the field of sports vision whose career began testing and training athletes across 15 Major League Baseball organizations in 1980, and has since spanned decades of work at the professional level. Dr. Teig and his associates have provided vision testing and training for the New York Yankees, the New York Knicks, and the NHL's Florida Panthers — where his practice serves as the team's exclusive vision-care provider — along with NHL officials, Olympic athletes, and professional golfers and tennis players.

Dr. Teig helped pioneer the idea that vision isn't fixed — it's trainable — and that even elite, professional-level athletes can gain a measurable competitive edge by sharpening the visual skills that get them to the ball, the puck, or the play a fraction of a second faster.

That training informs everything we do at RISV. We bring the same evaluation philosophy and training methodology used at the professional level and adapt it for athletes at every stage of development — from a first-year Little Leaguer to a college scholarship athlete to a weekend warrior looking for an edge.

Training With the Senaptec Strobe

One of the signature tools in our program is the Senaptec Strobe — liquid-crystal eyewear that flickers between clear and opaque at controlled intervals, essentially strobing the athlete's vision during drills and live activity.

Why strobe an athlete's vision on purpose? Because it forces the brain to do more with less. When the strobe interrupts visual input, the brain has to work harder to track motion, anticipate trajectories, and fill in gaps — sharpening the exact visual-processing skills that translate to game speed. Athletes who train with strobe glasses often see improvements in:

  • Anticipation and reaction time
  • Tracking fast-moving objects (pitches, pucks, passes)
  • Peripheral awareness under pressure
  • Focus and visual attention during fatigue

We incorporate the Senaptec Strobe into sport-specific drills — hitting, fielding, stickhandling, passing, catching — so the training carries directly onto the field, court, or ice, not just onto a testing chart.

Altius Performance-Tinted Lenses

For athletes who want an edge that lasts beyond the training session, we fit Altius Performance-Tinted Contact Lenses — single-use soft lenses engineered specifically for sport. Altius lenses use precision tints and light-filtering technology to cut glare, reduce visual noise, and sharpen contrast in outdoor and fast-changing light conditions, whether you're tracking a fly ball into the sun, reading a pitch under stadium lights, or picking up a ball against a bright sky.

Altius lenses are available whether or not you need vision correction, filter UV and blue light, and are worn by athletes across baseball, softball, golf, soccer, tennis, and more. We'll evaluate whether Altius is a fit for your sport, position, and typical playing conditions as part of your sports vision evaluation.

Sport-Specific Eyewear: Skiing, Swimming & Beyond

Standard glasses and contacts don't always hold up to the demands of every sport. That's why RISV also fits specialty sports eyewear and goggles built for the conditions of your specific activity, including:

  • Ski & snowboard goggles with prescription inserts or custom prescription lenses, so you can see the whole mountain in crisp, corrected detail — without fogging, glare off the snow, or the compromise of contacts in cold, dry air

  • Swim goggles with prescription lenses, giving swimmers of every age clear, corrected vision in the water without contacts, which aren't safe or practical for swimming

  • Sport-specific tinted and polarized lenses for cutting glare off water, snow, and turf

  • Impact-resistant protective eyewear for sports where eye safety and vision correction both matter — baseball, hockey, lacrosse, racquet sports, and more

Whether you need a durable pair of prescription sport goggles for your ski season or swim team, or protective eyewear that won't slow you down mid-play, we'll fit you with the right lens and frame for your sport.

Golf Vision: Precision for Every Swing

Golf asks more of your eyes than almost any other sport — and it asks for it in total silence, with no defender to blame and no second chance on the shot. From reading a green that breaks in three directions to judging distance across an open fairway to tracking a ball in flight against sky, trees, or sun glare, golf performance is built on visual skills most golfers never train.

At RISV, our golf-specific vision program addresses the visual demands unique to the game, including:

  • Depth perception and distance judgment — accurately reading yardage and elevation changes on approach shots

  • Green reading and contour perception — picking up subtle breaks and slopes that decide a putt

  • Dynamic tracking — following the ball off the clubface and through flight, especially against bright sky or a tree line

  • Contrast sensitivity — reading the line on a putt in flat, overcast light or picking a ball out of rough or shadow

  • Visual consistency and fatigue management — maintaining sharp focus and alignment over a four-hour round

  • Glare control — managing bright fairways, sand, and water hazards without losing definition

Golfers also benefit from Altius Performance-Tinted Contact Lenses and sport-specific tinted or polarized eyewear, which can enhance contrast against grass and sky and cut glare off sand and water — helping you read lines and track the ball more clearly from tee to green.

Whether you're a junior golfer building fundamentals, a competitive collegiate player, or a weekend golfer looking to shave strokes off your round, a RISV evaluation can identify exactly where your visual game could improve — and a customized training plan to help you get there.

The RISV Evaluation & Training Process

very athlete starts with a comprehensive sports vision evaluation, where we assess the visual skills that matter most in competition: dynamic acuity, depth perception, tracking, peripheral vision, reaction time, contrast sensitivity, and eye-hand/eye-body coordination.

From there, we build a personalized training plan. Depending on what the evaluation reveals — and on the demands of your sport and position — a training program may include:

  • Senaptec Strobe-based reaction and tracking drills

  • Sport-specific visual tracking and anticipation training

  • Eye-hand and eye-body coordination work

  • Peripheral awareness and split-attention drills

  • Contrast sensitivity training for low-light and glare conditions

  • Ongoing progress testing to track measurable improvement over time

Training is customized by sport, age, and level — a 10-year-old just learning to track a pitch needs a different program than a college goaltender reading a shooter's release point.

We Come to You

RISV isn't limited to our office. We work directly with teams and organizations on-site, bringing evaluations and training to:

  • Professional and semi-professional teams

  • College and university athletic programs

  • High school teams and athletic departments

  • Little League and youth baseball/softball organizations

  • Pee wee and youth hockey programs

  • Club and travel teams across all sports

Whether you're a coach looking to give your whole roster an edge, or an athletic director exploring a program-wide initiative, we'll design an on-site evaluation and training session built around your team's schedule and sport.

Every Age. Every Level.

From a first-time tee-ball player to a professional athlete, vision training has something to offer. Younger athletes benefit from developing strong visual-motor foundations early; competitive athletes benefit from squeezing out every possible edge; adult and masters-level athletes benefit from countering the natural visual slowdown that comes with age.

No matter where you are in your athletic journey, RISV can evaluate where your vision stands today — and build a plan to make it better.
